Tracking retractions as a window into the scientific process

Retraction four appears for management professor Ulrich Lichtenthaler

with one comment

Ulrich Lichtenthaler, a management professor at the University of Mannheim who has retracted three papers for statistical irregularities, has another retraction for his CV, this one in the Strategic Management Journal.

There’s no notice yet; all that appears for the January 2012 paper is this:

THIS ARTICLE HAS BEEN RETRACTED

RETRACTED: Integrated knowledge exploitation: The complementarity of product development and technology licensing

We assume that the paper is being retracted for the same reason as the other three, statistical irregularities, but we’ve reached out to the journal’s editors and will update with anything we learn.

Update, 10:15 a.m. Eastern, 9/13/12: The notice has now gone live:

The following article from the Strategic Management Journal, ‘Integrated knowledge exploitation: The complementarity of product development and technology licensing’ by Ulrich Lichtenthaler and Holger Ernst, published online on 4 January 2012 in Wiley Online Library (onlinelibrary.wiley.com), has been retracted by agreement between the authors, the journal Co-Editors, Richard A. Bettis, Will Mitchell, and Edward J. Zajac, and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The article is retracted at the authors’ request due to material technical errors in the article (the regression coefficients and standard errors do not fit with the significance levels of some of the controls and some of the independent variables in a number of the paper’s models) which have rendered many of the article’s conclusions incorrect. The first author takes the responsibility for these statistical errors.

  1. It’s time for Ernst & Lichtenthaler to resign.
